Old Dominion University Master of Science in Sports Management

This 1-2 year program is designed to prepare students for leadership roles within the sport industry. Students are given theoretical and practical knowledge to face the opportunities and challenges associated with sport business careers, all taught by experienced Ph.D. faculty in a convenient, online format. Classes are taken asynchronously so students can learn on their own time with flexibility to fit any schedule.

Enrollment Requirements:
Online students must meet the following standards and submit the following information in order to be eligible for acceptance into this program:

• Completed application
• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited institution or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution
• Personal essay
• Three letters of recommendation (at least one must be from a former professor)
• Current resume or CV
• Transcripts from all prior postsecondary institutions
• 3.0 GPA or higher in the undergraduate major
• GRE score of 291 or higher (verbal and quantitative sections) or a score of 400 or higher on either the GMAT or MAT

Classes Offered With Curriculum

• SMGT 746: Strategic Marketing in Sport
  This course will familiarize students with theoretical and practical aspects of sport marketing including the dynamic nature of sport media, publicity, and the importance of branding.
• SMGT 738: Sport Finance
  This course is designed to examine the principles and practices of financial management in diverse sport service settings. This course explores the basic concepts of financial planning and analysis required to effectively manage a successful sport operation, venue, team, or business.
• HPE 704: Advanced Studies in Adapted Physical Education
  This course provides experiences of teaching adapted physical education, as well as an understanding of disability related content that is applicable to physical education. Students will gain a deep knowledge of specific topics within disability studies in a theoretical as well as practical sense.
• SMGT 652: Facility Management for Sport, Recreation and Entertainment
  This course examines the principles of facility operation for sport, recreation, and entertainment events. Students gain an understanding of common challenges in managing common sport and entertainment venues.

Virginia Commonwealth University - Master of Science in Sport Leadership

This 36 hour graduate program combines theory and field experience to prepare students to work with professional and amateur athletes if they so choose, or to manage sports programs in a variety of academic, public or private sectors. The interdisciplinary faculty and curriculum give students the opportunity to concentrate on areas most important to them, and most relevant to their career goals within the sports industry.

Classes Offered With Curriculum

• SPTL 603: Research Methods in Sport
  This course is designed to help students acquire the fundamental skills of evaluating peer-reviewed research, while also facilitating the development of their own personal research projects.
• SPTL 635: Leadership Models in Sport
  Students will learn principles, techniques, and functions related to management, combining theory and leadership philosophy and applying both to issues of the sports industry.
• SPTL 634: Foundations in Coaching
  This course acquaints students with principles, techniques and functions related to coaching and administrative fundamentals for any sport. It covers topics in education as well as aspects of physical fitness training and safety.
• SPTL 695: Externship
  1-6 hours of fieldwork designed with the approval of the program. These planned experiences allow students to procure increased competencies in recreation, parks, and sport leadership, specifically in areas that they themselves choose and express interest in.

Sports Management is a diverse and multi-faceted field which can lead to a variety of interesting and fulfilling careers. Whether it’s your desire to work with athletes directly, or in a business or media capacity, a degree in sports management can set any sports-lover up for success in their desired field.

Sports Lawyer: Sports lawyers represent clients legally and assist with the execution of deals and contracts. Though it requires more education than a sports management degree, this degree provides the skills to negotiate, decline or terminate contracts, and protect clients legally in any instances of personal injury, breach of contract or potential lawsuits.

Event Sales Manager: A great event sales manager builds on relationships with existing customers and works to create new ones. By analyzing sales reports and departmental projections — as well as their own interactions with potential and current clients — they’ll develop programs, promotions, and incentives to increase revenue.

Sports Accountant: A sports accountant’s primary responsibility is to minimize loss by maintaining and managing financial records and creating accurate financial forecasts for sports teams, organizations and associations.

Facilities Manager: Someone needs to be responsible for leasing facilities for special events. This includes coordinating with contractors for food services, security, and construction and renovation as well as coordinating personnel across all departments. That someone is the facilities manager.
